Can I help beta test new versions of the iOS app?

If/when we have a Test Build available, you certainly can - and we really appreciate the help! We release new versions of the app every few months, and would love to have more iPhone and iPad users to beta-test each version before we submit it to the App Store.

Here's how you can help...

A. Join the iOS Users Forum!

Check out this group, and join to get the latest news about upcoming releases & other issues. You can also use the forums in that group to post about issues you find, or new features you'd like to see.

B. Send us your UDID!

In order to install our Test Builds on your device(s), we have to add your unique device IDs (UDIDs) to a special file that is included with the app itself. (More on that below...) Here's how you discover your UDID for a given iPhone or iPad:

  1. Connect your device to your computer
  2. Open iTunes and select your device on the left side-bar
  3. On the "Summary" screen for your device, you should see a Serial Number field near the top
  4. Click on the Serial Number field - it should change to show your UDID (a big string of numbers & letters)!
  5. With the UDID displayed (again, not the serial number), go to the File Menu > Copy; now it's in your clipboard & ready to paste!

Alternative method: If you don't want to connect your device to iTunes as described, there is another way: Go to the App Store on your device, and then find & install a free app called "ShareAbout": It's a very simple app that will let you send your device ID via email.

However you get your UDID, please email it to deepgreene@chess.com & we will ensure our very next Test Build will work on your device! Happily, you only ever have to do this step once... at least till you get a new phone. :)

(Please send the UDID from whatever email address you would prefer us to reply to, when relating news about new versions, etc.)

C. Install the Test Build!

This is actually pretty easy! Whenever it's ready, we will send you a link where you can download it onto your computer. And then...

  1. Delete any previous Chess.com app from your device
  2. Delete any previous Chess.com app from iTunes > Apps (you can trash the files when it asks)
  3. Unzip the downloaded file, and find two files in the archive
  4. With iTunes open to show your Apps, drag both files onto the App pane and drop them there - you should now see the Chess.com app (albeit without the usual graphical icon) in your list.
  5. Connect your device to your computer
  6. Select your device in the left panel in iTunes, and then select the Apps tab for your iPhone or iPad (upper-middle of the screen); in the list of apps, the Chess.com app should be unchecked now because you deleted it from your device.
  7. Check the box for the Chess app again - and then hit the Apply button to sync your device (and install the new version)

That's it! You're ready to play!

We recommend you open the app, sign in, totally close the app, and open it again. (Sounds strange, but that's the best approximation of installing a new version straight from the App Store.) Now just go ahead and use the app as you normally would: Check out the new features and let us know what you think, either by email or in the Forum!
