Troubleshooting steps if the Chess.com app is crashing, freezing, or won't open
Many common mobile app issues like crashes, freezing, slow performance, login problems, update issues, missing notifications, and other unexpected behavior can often be resolved by following the troubleshooting steps below.
Clear the app cache or data
Android
If you're experiencing freezing, slow performance, repeated or missing notifications, or other unexpected app behavior, clearing the app's cache and data may resolve the issue.
Before following the steps below, please make sure you know your username and password. Clearing the storage and cache will log you out of the app, and you'll need to log in again as if you're opening the app for the first time
Close the Chess.com app and locate it in your device's list of installed apps.
Tap and hold the app icon, then select 'App info.'
Tap 'Storage & cache.'
Select 'Clear cache and Clear storage' (this option may appear as 'Clear app data' on some devices).
Reopen the Chess.com app and sign in again.
iOS doesn't provide an option to clear an app's cache or data. If you're using an iPhone or iPad, try reinstalling the Chess.com app instead.
Reinstall the app
Android
Before reinstalling, make sure your device is running the latest version of the Android OS. See here for instructions on how to check or update your operating system: Check & update your Android version.
After ensuring your OS is up to date, please follow these steps:
Enter your Android deviceās settings, and navigate to 'Apps.'
Locate and select the Chess.com app.
Tap on 'Storage and Cache,' and then select āClear Storageā and 'Clear Cache' (this may also be labeled 'Clear App Data'). This step is crucial but often overlooked, so please don't skip it!
Uninstall the app.
Power your device off, then on.
Reinstall the app from the Google Play Store.
iOS
Before reinstalling on iOS, please check that your device is on iOS 16.4* or higher. If your device is running a version lower than iOS 16.4*, you will not be able to reinstall the app.
If you've confirmed that your iOS is up to date, please follow these steps:
Press and hold the app icon until it begins to wiggle.
Tap the 'X' in the top right corner of the app to uninstall it.
Reinstall the app from the App Store.
*We recommend visiting the Chess.com app page in your deviceās app store to see if your operating system is compatible.
