How to play against yourself on Chess.com

You can use Analysis to simulate a game against yourself, or try Pass and Play on the mobile app to control both sides in a match.

Playing against yourself

If you’d like to practice new openings or test your knowledge without the pressure of an opponent, you can play against yourself using the Analysis Board! Here's how to do it:

  1. Hover over 'Train' in the left-side menu of any Chess.com page, and select 'Analysis.'

  2. This will open the Analysis Board, where you can freely make moves for both white and black pieces.

Mobile

Our 'Pass and Play' feature is designed to help you play a game with a friend in person without a physical board, however, you can also use it to play against yourself! Here's how to do it:

  1. Open the Chess.com app and tap 'New Game' at the bottom of your home screen.

  2. Tap 'More' and select 'Pass and Play.'

  3. Customize your game and press 'Start' to begin your game!
