What is Solo Chess?
Updated over a month ago

Solo Chess is a fun and challenging single-player game that lets you engage with chess pieces in a unique way, without strictly following traditional chess rules. Instead of competing against an opponent, you play alone using your knowledge of how chess pieces move to solve puzzles.

How to play Solo Chess

  • Hover over 'More' in the left-side menu of any Chess.com page and select 'Solo Chess' from the appearing menu:

In Solo Chess, all the pieces on the board are the same color, and the goal is to move them so they capture each other until only one piece remains.

As the difficulty increases, more and more pieces are added to the puzzles, and you must navigate the maze of captures and find the path that leads to a lone remaining piece.

Rules of Solo Chess

  • Every move must capture a piece.

  • No piece may capture more than twice per puzzle. Pieces that have captured twice will turn black.

  • If there is a king on the board, it must be the final piece.

Example puzzle

Here’s an example to illustrate how Solo Chess works:

Solution:

  • Move the knight on f8 to capture the knight on h7.

  • Capture the knight now on h7 with the bishop.

  • Finally, capture the bishop with the king.

If you had moved the knight on h7 first, the bishop would be stranded, making it impossible to end with a lone king!
