Game Explorer on Chess.com
The Chess.com Game Explorer is a powerful tool for studying opening moves used by top Grandmasters. With this tool, you can search through millions of master-level games, discover the most common openings and moves, and study how Grandmasters approach similar positions.
Getting started
To access the Explorer, hover over 'More' in the left-side menu of any Chess.com page and select 'Explorer' from the options. Alternatively, when reviewing a game, you can open Analysis from any position or select 'Make Moves' on the Analysis landing page, then switch to the 'Explore' tab.
The Game Explorer will display data for the position currently shown on the board.
For each position in the opening and sometimes the middle game, the Game Explorer shows possible moves, how often they were played, win percentages for White and Black, engine evaluations for each move, and notable games where the position occurred.
Simply click on a move from the 'Moves to play in this position' list, or make moves on the board, and the chart will update to show the next set of move options and results.
The opening database contains nearly 3 million games, all played by masters, and is updated weekly with new games. This ensures that every line you study has been played at a high level!
Explore your own games
You can also explore your own games and identify strengths and weaknesses in your opening play. To do this, click the dropdown menu where it says 'Master Games' and select 'My Games.' You can also view games played by other Chess.com members, not just Grandmasters.
Explore in Daily games
In your ongoing or completed Daily games, you’ll find a tab called Openings, which is a simplified version of the Game Explorer. It provides the same game data but without move evaluations or notable games, allowing you to use it during Daily games while staying within our Fair Play policy.
