Where do Chess.com puzzles come from?

Discover how Chess.com generates its puzzles, and learn how your own games could contribute to creating new ones!

Updated over 2 months ago

Tactics (puzzles) are present in every chess game—it’s just a matter of spotting them!

Our chess engine analyzes games played on Chess.com (and other sources) to identify positions with blunders. When you click 'Analyze' after a game, the engine looks for major evaluation swings, usually caused by blunders. If it detects one, it examines the position with a sophisticated algorithm to identify the best move and tags it with relevant themes (like forks or skewers).

This means that any position from your own games could become a puzzle! Just by playing, you're helping generate new puzzles. We add hundreds each week, and we review those flagged as flawed by members.
