What kind of username can I choose?
What kind of username can I choose?
Updated over a week ago

On Chess.com, we expect usernames to follow the same guidelines as our community policies.

This means NO:

  • Foul language in your name

  • Sexual terms or sexual innuendos in your name

  • Racism/slurs in your name

  • Threatening/violent names

  • Sexist names or otherwise bigoted names.

We also do not allow politically motivated names (such as political parties or party leaders), or names which may cause religious offence.

While the above are clearly against our rules, we also reserve the right to change any other name that we think has been chosen specifically to cause hurt or discomfort or to 'troll' other members.

There are also some names we do not allow for reasons not related to our community policies:

NO:

  • Names impersonating famous chess players (such as OfficialMagnusCarlsen, for example)

  • Names impersonating Staff or Moderators

  • Names impersonating Bots (such as Juan-Bot or Julia-Bot)

Finally, although it is allowed, we advise you do not use your real name as your username. There are many reasons not to share your real name online to strangers!
