Can I take back a bad move?

Would you like to take back a move during a game? You can โ€” but only if youโ€™re playing a Takeback game in Daily Chess!

Takeback games are always unrated and are a great tool for learners or players who want to guide and help each other.

Takebacks are not available in Live Chess.

How to allow takebacks in a game

  1. Click 'Play' in the left-side menu, then select 'Play' from the dropdown.

  2. On the New Game screen, click on the time control box and choose a Daily game from the dropdown.

  3. After selecting your time control, click 'Custom' to see a list of customizable options for your game.

  4. Make sure the 'Rated' toggle is turned off โ€” this will reveal the 'Allow Takebacks' option. Toggle 'Allow Takebacks' on, then click 'Play' to search for a match or send a challenge!

How do I take back a move?

Either player can request a takeback at any time:

  • If it's your move, clicking 'Takeback' will undo your opponent's last move, returning the turn to them. (You might use the chat feature to suggest an alternative move.)

  • If it's not your move, clicking 'Takeback' will undo your last move, making it your turn again.

In a Takeback Daily game, the 'Take Back Move' icon (a curved arrow) appears below the move list:
