How do I change my background, board, and pieces?
Updated over a week ago

Mix and match pieces, backgrounds, boards, and sounds until you find the perfect combination for your tastes!

Web

Change Board and Pieces

  • Hover over Settings in the bottom left-side menu and click All Settings

  • Select Board and Pieces from the settings menu - This will allow you to choose the style of pieces and board color from drop-down lists

  • You can also decide where you want to keep or disable coordinates and choose the type of notation and annotation

  • When adjusting the piece style and board color, you will see a preview of what your board and pieces will look like in the image to the right of the options

  • Click Save to apply the changes

Change Theme

  • Hover over Settings in the bottom left-side menu and click All Settings

  • Select Themes to see a large selection of pre-made themes. These will set a new background while you play chess and what others see when viewing your profile. Themes include preset board and piece combinations and move sounds:

  • Scroll through the themes to find one you like, or click Custom to create your own theme from the available backgrounds and board/piece options

If you later want to change your board or pieces without editing your custom theme, go back to Board and Pieces and make your changes there. This will keep your background and move sounds but change the board and pieces. You can always go back to Themes to re-enable your custom theme later if you want.

If you are not getting the option to set a custom background, this might be because your account has been muted or is otherwise restricted. If this is your case, please contact support for assistance.

Mobile

  • Tap More in the menu at the bottom and select Theme

  • Choose from 26 different pre-made themes!

  • Alternatively, create your own by selecting Custom at the top of the themes list. You can choose the background, pieces, board, and sounds you want! For the background, you can even use an image from your device!
