Board & Pieces settings
Click 'Settings' from the bottom-left corner of any Chess.com page, and you'll land on the 'Board and Pieces' settings page where you can customize the color of your board, choose your preferred piece style, and change the background. If you'd like a quicker setup, you can select from a variety of premade board and piece sets.
On this page, you can also manage how you move your pieces, choose your piece movement animations, enable or disable animations before and after games, and select the sound effects for when moves are made.
Custom backgrounds
To upload a custom background, go to the 'Interface' settings page and scroll to the bottom of the page where you’ll find the option to upload your own.
If you're unable to set a custom background, it may be due to your account being muted or restricted. Please reach out to our Support team for assistance.
In-game screen
If you're playing or watching a game, you can customize your board and pieces by clicking the cogwheel ('Settings') icon next to your opponent's timer in the upper-right corner, just outside the board.
This will open the Settings pop-up window, which defaults to the 'Board' tab. Here you can use the dropdown menus and toggles to adjust the board color, piece style, and other preferences to your liking.
Mobile
Tap 'More' in the menu at the bottom of your screen, then select 'Theme.' You'll see a list of available themes, which are pre-designed sets of boards, pieces, and backgrounds.
To create your own custom theme, tap 'Custom' at the top of the list. From there, you can mix and match your background, pieces, board, and sound settings!
