How do I open a chat window with my friend?

Even if you aren't playing a game with them, you can still live chat with your friends!

Opening a chat window

  • Hover over the 'Connect' option in the left menu and click the 'Chat' tab.

  • You'll see a list of your active chats —Click on a friend's name to open the chat window and continue your conversation.

    • If you haven’t chatted with someone in a while, the chat will move to the 'Inactive Chats' section. Click on it to view all your previous conversations.

Starting a new chat

  • If you haven’t started a chat with a friend yet, hover over 'Social' on the left-side menu of any Chess.com page and click on the 'Friends' tab.

  • Hover over your friend's name and click the icon that appears next to their name to open a chat window:


Using the chat window

Using emojis

  • Click the icon in the lower-right corner of the chat window to see the available emojis.

  • To close the emoji window, press the 'Escape' key or click the 'X' at the top right corner of the emoji window.

Managing the chat window

  • Once your chat window is open, simply type your message in the text box. The chat window will stay open on your screen even if you navigate to other areas of Chess.com or play a game.

  • Click '_' to minimize the chat window or 'X' to close it. Your messages will still be there when you reopen the chat.
