Why can’t I get paired in Live Chess on the app anymore?

Learn why Live Chess pairing no longer works on outdated app versions and how to update your app to restore matchmaking.

Updated this week

As of May 2025, we’ve ended matchmaking support for outdated app versions, specifically, version 4.6.11 and earlier on Android, and 4.7.1 and earlier on iOS. If you try to start a Live Chess game on one of these versions, you’ll see the message: “You are not allowed to start the match.” To keep playing Live Chess with automated matchmaking, please update your app.

If you can’t update, you can still use your current version to access: Puzzles, Lessons, Daily Chess, Live games (via direct challenges), Tournaments (including those with live games).

Alternatively, if you can't update the app, you can try using the Chess.com website in your mobile browser.
