Rating restrictions
If you're unable to challenge a friend and receive a message like the one below, it means your friend's challenge settings only allow players within a certain rating range to send game requests. Since your rating falls outside that range, the challenge is automatically blocked.
Your friend can either ignore rating restrictions for friend challenges or adjust their rating range to include yours by following the steps below.
Web
Click the cogwheel icon ('Settings') in the bottom-left corner of any Chess.com page, then select 'All Settings.'
Choose 'Gameplay' from the settings menu. Scroll down to the 'Challenges' section, and toggle 'Ignore Rating for Incoming Friend Challenges.'
A checkmark will appear, confirming the change has been applied!
Mobile
The 'Ignore Rating for Incoming Friend Challenges' setting isn't currently available in the Chess.com apps. However, your friend can still expand their rating range to include yours.
Tap 'More' at the bottom of your screen and select 'Settings.'
Tap 'Play' in the settings menu, and use the boxes under 'Rating Limits' to update the range to include your friend's rating.
Alternatively, if you prefer not to change your rating range, you can access Chess.com through your mobile browser and follow the steps above.
Your rating range settings apply to both Live and Daily chess games.
