How can I disable the rating range on Chess.com?

Learn how to customize the rating range of members you get paired with and how to hide it during gameplay.

Customizing the rating range lets you only be paired against opponents within a rating range you feel comfortable playing.

Web

  • Click the cogwheel icon in the upper-right corner of your board.

  • Select the 'Play' tab in the pop-up window.

  • Under the 'General' section, you will find drop-down menus to set the rating range for opponents when sending or accepting a challenge.

  • After customizing your settings, be sure to click 'Save' to apply the changes:

Mobile

The steps below work for both the iOS and Android Chess.com mobile apps:

  • Tap 'More' from the menu at the bottom of the screen and select 'Settings.'

  • From the settings menu, tap 'Play.'

  • Use the boxes to select the rating range of the opponents you want to be paired against:

How to hide the ratings during a game

We understand that an opponent's rating can feel intimidating, so we’ve made it easy to hide it by customizing your settings. Here's how to do it:

Web

  • Under the 'Live' section toggle the 'Hide ratings during the game' option.

  • Click 'Save' to apply the changes:
