How do I clear my browser cache?
How do I clear my browser cache?
Updated over 7 months ago

You should periodically clear the cache to allow your browser to function more efficiently. It's basically like a "tune up" for the browser and is necessary every once in a while :)

Watch this video for the steps on how to do it, or read on below!

Google Chrome

1. Click on the 'three dots' menu button in the upper right of your screen and choose 'settings'

2. Scroll down to the 'Privacy and Security' section:

3. Click on 'Clear browsing data'

4. Select the options you want to delete:

For best results leave at least the top 4 options selected. You can choose additional options if you want.

5. When you have made your choices, click 'clear data'. When the data clear is complete, restart the browser.

Mozilla Firefox

The Firefox cache temporarily stores images, scripts, and other parts of websites you visit in order to speed up your browsing experience.

To clear your history (i.e. cookies, browsing history, cache, etc.) all at once, see Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox.

Clear the cache

  1. Click the menu button and choose 'Options'

  2. Select 'Privacy and Security' on the left

  3. In the Cookies and Site Data section, click 'Clear Data'

  4. In the pop up window that appears, make sure 'Cached Web Content' is checked, then click 'Clear'

  5. Close the options page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.

Automatically clear the cache

You can set Firefox to automatically clear the cache when Firefox closes:

  1. Click the menu button and choose 'Options'

  2. Select 'Privacy and Security' on the left

  3. In the Cookies and Site Data section, select the checkbox for Delete Cookies and Site History when Firefox closes.

  4. Select the checkbox for Clear history when Firefox closes.

  5. Close the options page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.

Microsoft Edge

Click on the Menu button in the upper right corner, then click on 'settings':

This will take you to your profile page for Edge. On the next screen, click on the 'settings' menu dropdown in the upper left:

Then Click on 'Privacy, search, and services' as shown in the above image.

Scroll down until you see the clear browsing data section, and click on 'choose what to clear':

Leave the check boxes as they are, and then click 'clear now'

If you want to check more boxes and clear out your saved passwords and auto-fill data, for example, you may, but this is usually not necessary to fix most cache related issues.

It's a good idea to clear out this data every few weeks!

Internet Explorer

NOTE: Internet Explorer is no longer supported by Windows, and no longer receives updates! This means that modern websites like Chess.com may have certain features that don't work or behave strangely on Internet Explorer. If you are using Internet Explorer we recommend that you switch to Chrome or Firefox, or to the new Microsoft browser, Edge.

First thing we want to do is make sure your Internet Explorer is up to date!.

We also want to make sure it’s auto-updating.

After you click on “About Internet Explorer”, the little window will pop up letting you know which version you’re using and will have a clickable box to allow an install of new versions as they are released.

Now we will click on the icon

again to reach the settings and clear your browser cache :)
