Handling abuse on Chess.com
Chess.com is a global community of chess players, and while most interactions on the platform are positive, you may sometimes come across rude or offensive behavior.
Unfortunately, we can't monitor every comment made by every member, so we've developed tools to help you control your interactions:
Disable the in-game chat
If someone makes an unwelcome comment while you’re playing a game, you can easily disable the chat by following the steps below. Please keep in mind this action can't be undone and will disable chat for the rest of the game.
Web
The steps below apply to both Live and Daily games.
Click the Chat tab at the top of the right-side panel.
Click the three dots on the far right of the chat text box.
For Daily games, select Disable Chat for this Game. For Live games, choose your preferred chat setting from the options provided.
Mobile
You can disable chat entirely on the apps for both Live and Daily games. Here's how:
Android
Tap on 'More' from the menu at the bottom of the homepage.
Select 'Settings' and tap 'Social.'
Tap on 'Allow game chat' to set your preference: Always, Friends Only or Never.
iOS
Tap on 'More' from the menu at the bottom of the homepage.
Select 'Settings' and tap 'Play.'
Tap 'Allow Chat' and then select your preference: Always, Friends Only or Never.
Block the member
When you block someone, they won’t be able to contact you in any way on the site. A blocked user can't:
Post notes to your account.
Send you messages.
Send you game challenges.
Send you a friend request.
Be auto-matched with you in open seeks.
Join tournaments that you are running.
Post in content that you created.
If you come across users who consistently behave badly or are extremely offensive, please report them to us. Learn here how: How do I report someone?
