How do I turn on/off the legal moves dots on the board?

Learn how to turn the legal moves feature on or off on Chess.com to show or hide all possible moves for the selected piece on the board.

Legal Moves

Why are there dots on certain squares when you click on a piece? These dots highlight all the legal moves for that piece. This feature is enabled by default for new accounts, but you can easily turn it off if you prefer.

Web

  1. Click the cogwheel icon ('Settings') in the bottom-left corner of any Chess.com page, then select 'All Settings.'

  2. Select 'Gameplay' from the settings menu and toggle the 'Show Legal Moves' option to your liking.

  3. Click 'Save' to apply the changes.

Mobile

  1. Tap 'More' from the menu at the bottom of your screen and select 'Settings.'

  2. Tap 'Board' and toggle 'Show Legal Moves' to your preference.
